CAMERON, LA (KPLC) - Miles and miles of Louisiana coast is now protected by miles and miles of large sand bags. But, the job is not finished. The Louisiana National Guard continues to shore up the coastline.
"There is a lot of moving parts. There's dump trucks, there's getting guys back and forth," said Captain Jeffrey Giering with the Louisiana National Guard. "It's hard work, it's hot, there's not a lot of shade out here, on the beach, but it's alright. We like doing things for ourselves, and for the people of our state."
Their hard work has not gone unnoticed by Cameron residents living along Holly Beach.
"We appreciate them. We count on them, and I thank them very much for the job that they're doing," said Gene Reynolds
"The bags here, I am not saying it's a catch all, but I tell you what, it's a whole lot better step that the federal government has done," said Bryan Benoit.
So, regardless of where the oil goes, Louisiana is making sure to prepare now, rather than later.
