WESTLAKE, LA (KPLC) - Early this morning, the LA Senate passed Bill 173 which prohibits the manufacture, sale and possession of herbal incense(K2, VooDoo, Serenity, Fiya, Spice, etc) in a unanimous decision, raising the question to those who distribute the product...why ban it if its legal???

Patricia Maynerd, co-owner of Westlake Quick Stop says, "there are enough things that are illegal for the police to have to try to keep as it is, as long as its legal and they haven't proven anything, side affects...why ban it? Until they have more positive proof."

The products have been a big money maker as the store makes a thousand dollars a week from herbal incense sells.  The store believes that if does become illegal to sell the products, the store as well as the state would lose out in terms of revenue.

Maynard says, "the state right now can use the revenue, I can use it, so why ban something that is legal?  I think they should just make it tougher to get, with strict ID checks...".

One distributor tells KPLC that it's generated more than 500 thousand dollars in sales revenue in Calcasieu Parish.  Its a multimillion dollar industry for Louisiana, that the state legislature is looking to do without.

It's a tug of war that's bound to make some residents in south Lake Charles unhappy.  A proposed townhouse complex has already been approved but there's a request to change how future residents will get in and out. Some believe Country Club Road is the better option, to avoid disrupting quiet neighborhoods in that area. But the realtor says they want to avoid congestion on an already busy road.
