Marching for meals in Jeff Davis Parish

JENNINGS, LA (KPLC-TV) – The Jeff Davis Council on Aging held a "March for Meals" fundraising walk-a-thon Friday evening at Louisiana Oil and Gas Park in Jennings to benefit the Jeff Davis Meals on Wheels Program.

Area Meals on Wheels programs have become victims of the recession. The programs receive state and federal funding, but not enough to keep up with rising costs and demand.

"We still have about 275 [seniors] on the waiting list," said Kaly Gist, with the Jeff Davis Council on the Aging. "We've got to start cutting down this list of people that we have on the waiting list."

For many seniors, the only person they come into contact with all day is the driver who delivers their meals.

Only a few people showed up for the actual walk-a-thon, but Gist said she was able to raise a lot of money nevertheless.

"I was able to raise a lot of money just from donations, just from going out and getting the word out and asking for sponsors," said Gist.

Anyone interested in donating to the Meals on Wheels program should call the Jeff Davis Council on the Aging at (337)824-5504.
