LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The defending national champions of college baseball were down to their final out in two different innings.
LSU was never intimidated.
Trey Watkins' two-RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the LSU Tigers a dramatic victory over UC Irvine in their NCAA Tournament opener, 11-10.
The Tigers trailed 10-9 going into the 11th inning. In fact, the bases were empty for the Tigers with two outs in that inning. That makes LSU's comeback even more special because both runs came via a two-run rally.
Micah Gibbs had a huge game for the Tigers. He went 2-5, with a home run and five RBI's. Ben Alsup was the winning pitcher for LSU, allowing him to improve to 5-0 this season.
Winning the first game of an NCAA regional is nothing new for LSU. The Tigers are now 23-1 all-time in NCAA regional openers.
LSU will now play the winner of the UCLA/Kent State game on Saturday, June 5th.
