WELSH, LA (KPLC) - Ever used toothpicks to make art?  One man does just that.  His name is Michael A. Smith and he's called, the "Toothpick Man".  A native of Port Allen, Smith began making sculptures out of toothpicks and has been doing it for 35yrs now.

He loves traveling and speaking with kids. He was seen at the McBurney Memorial Library in Welsh and says, "all of us have gifts and talents and I try to relay that message also to kids".

He has been a featured artist at the Disney Epcot Park and is in the 2007 Guinness Book of World Records for a 320lb, 15ft long alligator he created with 3 million toothpicks.  Ripley's Believe It or Not have even offered him $175 thousand dollars for it.  But he doesn't want to sell it because, "its not the right thing to do right now", says Smith, "it helps me to promote my other work and myself as well".
