LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – The Maplewood-Hollywood Lions Club held their 25th Memorial Day Celebration today.
Tim Lyons, the Lion President, stated, "To give back in honor of the fallen heroes is just something that the Lions Club and the city of Sulphur is looking forward to every year."
After 25 years, the club's Memorial Day service continues to impact all of the people that attend.
"You see it in their eyes, that they appreciate what we do," said Lyons. "They also know that without the fallen heroes we would not be here today."
From wreath ceremony, to the new flag being raised and the playing of taps, this Memorial Day was just as much a day of remembrance, as it was as a day of celebration.
Retired Navy Captain, Joe Hill stated, "Fallen comrades make it a very solemn time, but we can also celebrate what they achieved. We are free people today because of what they gave."
The service also recognized the many different faces of local veterans.
"There are so many things today that tend to separate us, but at the end of the day, we're all Americans and we are free today because of the common effort of all peoples," said Hill.
