LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - As the nation pauses today to remember fallen soldiers, Southwest Louisiana continues in the same tradition by hosting several local events.

The Avenue of Flags takes place at Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery on Broad St. in Lake Charles. A ceremony starts at 9 a.m., while the 770 flags will be on display until late afternoon.

The Maplewood-Hollywood Lions Club Memorial Day Service is this morning at 10 a.m.  It's being held at its clubhouse at 3310 Maplewood Drive. It will include a reading of local veteran's names killed in action during wartime along with the presentation of the colors.

Later, a 21-gun salute will take place along with the raising of a 20-by-30 foot United States flag. There will also be a flag retirement ceremony.

The Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk will host a Memorial Day service this morning at 11:30 at Warrior Memorial Park.

This year's ceremony will be attended by more than 120 survivors of Fort Polk soldiers who have fallen in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
