LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – After two weather delays and extra innings LSU defeated Alabama, 4-3 to win their third straight SEC title.
Second baseman Tyler Hanover knocked in the game-winning run on a single to left field in the top of the eleventh inning.
Designated hitter Matt Gaudet sparked LSU with a single to left center. He later took second base on an infield single by Mikie Mahtook. The Tigers brought freshman Matt Fury in to pinch run for Gaudet and Hanover plated Fury to put the Tigers on top 4-3.
Pitcher Anthony Ranaudo tossed the three final shutout innings to seal the victory for the Tigers.
LSU took an early three nothing, scoring two runs in the second inning and adding another in the third.
In the second, Gaudet hit a two-run double to left, scoring Alex Edward and Leon Landry.
Mahtook provided the Tigers with their third run, sending out a solo home run in the third inning.
Alabama evened the score after picking up one run in the fourth, and later runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The start of the fifth inning marked the first of two weather delays. Officials stopped the game for an hour and twenty minutes because of heavy rain and lightening in the area. Play was stopped for the second time in the bottom of the ninth for an hour due to rain.
The Tigers will learn where they will play and who they will face in the NCAA Regional round tomorrow at 11:30a.m.
