New police chief makes changes

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas is assigning six additional detectives to the department's overworked homicide unit.

The Times-Picayune reported Monday that Serpas said that the six new detectives will join the 17 currently assigned to the division.

At a press briefing, Serpas also announced he was shifting oversight of the agency's crime lab unit. The crime lab will now fall under the Bureau of Investigations, and will report to Deputy Chief Marlon Defillo.

Serpas also noted that he is examining whether district officers could take their own fingerprint evidence in some cases, helping to ease the burden on the taxed crime lab.
