Making a difference out of a tragedy

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – In death, Mac Burns is making a difference through golf, the game he loved. The West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (WCCH) Foundation will improve healthcare in the community, by teeing off in honor of Burns this weekend.

"Mac was the love of my life and his name being mentioned once a year is wonderful and it's such an honor to have him remembered in such a special way," said Lucy Burns, Mac's mother.

Mac lost his life in a car accident in 1992. Since his untimely death, the Mac Burns Memorial Golf Tournament has been held to honor the Sulphur High Graduate and golf standout. Now in its 18th year, the tournament has teamed up with the WCCH Foundation Golf Tournament.

Burns stated, "We felt like maybe our help could help the hospital gain some of the things that they needed."

In the past, the Mac Burns Memorial Golf Tournament raised funds for academic and golf scholarships at McNeese State University, but this year, with WCCH, the proceeds will benefit the hospitals foundation to enhance healthcare resources in southwest Louisiana.

"It will go to several different things. It will go to some of our equipment needs as well as some of the needs in the hospital," said Bill Hankins, Chief Executive Officer with WCCH.

The hospital could purchase anything from new defibrillators, to new equipment for the nursery, cardiology department, or emergency room, depending on what is needed,

Hankins stated, "Having the latest and greatest equipment always helps the physicians as well as our employees in being able to take care of patients in our community."

Before his death, Mac made an impact on those around him, but now he'll touch the lives of many more.

"It's wonderful to know that something so good can come out of something so tragic," said Burns.

The Mac Burns/West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament begins at 8:00 a.m.  Saturday morning, but it's not too late to join. You can call (337) 504-6639, to reserve a spot with an NFL celebrity golfer for a donation of $500.00 in addition to your team cost.
