DERIDDER, LA (KPLC-TV) – The second day of the trial of accused child killer Jeffrey Denby ended after a jury was selected on Tuesday
Seven women and five men will decide Denby's fate. The jury was selected just after three o'clock in the afternoon after almost two days of perspective juror questioning. The jurors range from older adults to a pair of college students. Two additional women were also selected as alternates.
The jurors were sworn-in and given special instructions from presiding Judge Martha O'Neal before being released for the day.
Opening statements are scheduled to start on Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. at the Beauregard Parish Courthouse.
Denby is facing potential life in prison if he is convicted of first degree murder in the death of 18-month-old John Thomas Anthony Brewer. Of course, jurors could find Denby guilty of lesser charges. Authorities said Denby killed the child while the boy was in his care in June 2009.
So far, neither relatives for Denby nor the toddler have appeared at the trial.
The toddler's mother, Holly Brewer, has been charged with accessory after the fact to second degree child cruelty. Brewer's trial is scheduled for June 21st.
