Oil at 2nd barrier island off Terrebonne Parish

RACCOON ISLAND, La. (AP) - Louisiana officials say oily debris has washed up on Raccoon Island. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries describes the island as 1 of the coast's most important waterbird nesting areas.

It's just west of Whiskey Island, where authorities said Wednesday that oil had been found. While photos from Whiskey Island showed the thick, glossy globs called tar balls, those from Raccoon Island showed oil globules with blackened sand around them.

The photos were taken Wednesday but made public Thursday.

Both islands are in the Terrebonne Barrier Islands Refuge. They're the westernmost points oil has been found so far.

Oil was found earlier at South Pass and the Chandeleur Islands.
