LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – The McNeese State Cowboys scored three late runs, but fell short in the final game of their series against the Texas State Bobcats, 6-3.
Texas State took a 5-0 lead in the seventh inning, but the Cowboys cut into their lead in the bottom frame when Seth Granger singled to score Steve Irvine.
After the Bobcats extended their lead by one run in the eighth, the Cowboys scored two more in the ninth on an Irvine single to score Jace Peterson and Jordan Venalbe scoring Irvine.
The pokes struggled offensively, while Bobcats' pitcher, Mitchell Pitts, allowed four hits, walked one batter and struck out four.
Tyler Davis, the Cowboys starting pitcher, threw seven innings, giving up nine hits and five runs.
McNeese State head coach, Terry Burrows, talked about the performances of Pitts and Davis after the game.
"Kid [Mitchell Pitts] threw a pretty good game, he came in competed and threw strikes and we just didn't do a good job," said Burrows. "We ended up having some quick innings with him, I don't know what inning we had a four pitch inning for him, and at the same time you got to tip your hat to him a little bit, but I don't think we competed very well at the plate today."
Burrows continued, "You know I thought Tyler threw pretty well, you know all up until that one inning he had some mistakes when he didn't field his position very well, couldn't field a couple of bunts. He ended up with a three run inning, it's just that three inning hurt him, other than that I really though he threw the ball well."
The Cowboys will face UT San Antonio on the road beginning Friday.
