Bond reduced for two arrested in Rankins case

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Two suspects in the Alexus Rankins murder case were successful in getting their bonds reduced on Thursday.

Rankins is the Lake Charles teen killed in a gang related shooting while she walked home from the movies back in March.

Nina Lambert Newton and Rodney Bernard Newton were in court on Thursday. They are the parents of the accused trigger man charged with first degree murder and his brother charged with manslaughter. Prosecutors say the couple tried to help cover up the crime.

Judge Clayton Davis agreed they are neither a danger to the community or a serious flight risk, so he reduced their bonds.

Rodney Newton's bond was cut from $400,000 to $50,000. Nina Newton's bond was dropped from $200,000 to $100,000
