Skull found in Beauregard Parish

DERIDDER, LA (KPLC) – While clearing land just south of DeRidder, on Wednesday, a worker stumbled across a human skull. Now, authorities would like to know who it belongs to.

"We're in the process of checking our missing persons. There is none that I am aware of, from this particular area, but we do have a couple that we do need to check out," said Beauregard Parish Sheriff, Ricky Moses.

Officials said the skull could have been around anywhere from three to ten years. It also could have been dragged there by an animal. Very little is known, right now, about the skull. Crews  continue to look in the area the skull was found for anything that could help with the investigation.

"After being on the job for twenty minutes, we have already made some discoveries," said Zeb Johnson with the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office.

Forensic anthropologist, Mary Manhein from the LSU FACES Laboratory, in Baton Rouge was called to offer assistance in the examination of the skeletal remains.

"We're still going to go back, take these to our laboratory, the remains that have been found, a skull and a few other bones, and do our analysis on them," said Manhein. "We will take a bone sample, maybe a tooth sample, and put that into multiple national databases."

According to specialists, preliminary examinations suggest the skeleton is a male under the age of 50.
