Woman 74, pleads guilty, 95-year-old's death

COVINGTON, La. (AP) - A 74-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2006 death of her 95-year-old roommate at a Mandeville nursing home.

Karolina Glover had been charged with second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence. But she was allowed to plead to the lesser charge Monday before state District Judge Richard A. "Rick" Swartz, who sentenced her to 30 years, according to The Times-Picayune.

Mandeville police said that on Nov. 9, 2006, Glover beat Bernice Mayeaux in the face and arms with a metal drawer handle in their room at the Pontchartrain Health Care Center. Although Glover reportedly suffered from bouts of dementia, detectives said her attempt to hide the drawer handle suggested she was in control of her actions.
