The family of Alexus Rankins speaks out

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - "I thought, no, this is not true," said Alice Williams, Alexus Rankins' aunt.

Family members are still in shock, after that tragic day, when 14 year old Alexus Rankins had been gunned down, while walking home from the movies. Lake Charles police immediately began an investigation. A tip they received from a viewer lead to a major break in the case.

"Through the course of our investigation, we have learned and gathered enough information that supported our evidence for a warrant to be signed, and issued," said Sgt. Mark Kraus with the Lake Charles police department.

That warrant lead police to an address in Lafayette. Now, three men are behind bars. Police believe Joshua Lambert, and Sean Newton of Lake Charles were involved, as well as a third suspect, a juvenile, whose name is not being released. But, police are still on the look out, with more arrests to come.

"Someone comes along and thinks it's cool to emulate things they see on TV, and drive by, and shoot into a crowd of people. Now a 14 year old girl has died," said Sgt. Kraus.

The family of Alexus Rankins continue to visit the place, where a person they loved so much, would be lost forever. Some brought flowers, and others just sat and remembered the happy girl they loved so much.

"She was one of those that you always saw laughing, and playing, and making everyone happy around her. That's going to be missed," said Anthony Williams, Alexus Rankins' Uncle.

With the people, police believe are responsible, off the streets, for a family hurting, it is a small consolation for the loss of a loved one.

This case is still under investigation.  Police still need your help. If you have any information on this case, you can call the Lake Charles police department at 491-1311, or Crime Stoppers at 439-2222.
