Underdog the Wonderdog gets a makeover

By Lee Peck - bio | email

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Calcasieu Animal Services is always looking to find abandoned dogs good homes. Of course some are more easier to place than others. One of those "hard to place dogs" was a Shih Tzu was found abandoned a couple of weeks ago in a Lake Area neighborhood. Animal control estimates the dog is about a year and a half old and has never seen a groomer.

"It's taken a long time for him to get like this bad," explains Diana Morales, with Animal Control. "He's in bad shape, under his neck there is a matt that is probably six inches long and I don't know two inches thick. His tail is a solid mat, he can't even feel it"

With not much of a chance of attracting a prospective pet owner, the little dog was set to be euthanized. That was until Animal Services saw something special behind all that tangled hair.

"Look at those sweet eyes under there. He does have some sweet eyes," said Morales.

Call it an experiment of tender, love and care - they're going to take this underdog and make him a wonderdog. And their work is definitely cut out for them.

"You won't recognize him. Once we finish with him he's going to be gorgeous. You're going to see," said Morales.

"In comes the groomer for the first phase in this puppy makeover. A long over due hair cut looks more like she's sheering a sheep. But with each cut and clip Underdog's matted tresses start to fall. After more than an hour and a half a newer, cuter pooch starts to emerge.

"The transformation is amazing. It's even better than I thought it would be," said Morales.

Now that he's groomed, Underdog is off to obedience school.

"Good boy. Good boy. Sit." - Sally Stride, owner of Proper Pooches, teaches Underdgo some basic commands to make him more adoptable.

"Like most dogs once you put the on a routine, and you make them sit for things and you have them know what's expected out of life they tend to come around quite quickly," explained Stride. "And I believe this dog was someone's pet. He is very attentive and catches on quickly to the commands. I don't think he's going to have a problem finding a new home."

You could say it's a new "leash" on life for a dog no wanted.

"Doesn't he look appreciative. He's like a new man. He says now all I need is a family - a forever family… that will love him and groom him," said Morales.

Underdog the Wonderdog - has no heart worms and was given a clean bill of health. He's also potty trained. If you'd like to give him a home you can call Calcasieu Animal Services at 721-3730.

It's not unusual to hear complaints about the U.S. Postal Service in our area. The latest comes from a neighborhood off Nelson Road where residents say they no longer get daily delivery. "Whether snow, sleet or rain or whatever it   should be delivered," said Terry Bellard, who lives at Smith Village mobile home community. Residents say their mail is no longer delivered regularly.
