Enviro. education symposium registration still open

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Registration is still open for the 2010 Environmental Education Symposium set for February 26-27 in Baton Rouge. The symposium provides educators the opportunity to acquire professional development on environmental issues and earn valuable continuing learning units (CLUs).

This two-day event, staged at the Baton Rouge Marriott, is designed for environmental and science educators at all levels including supervisors, youth group organizers, informal educators, and anyone else with a vested interest in environmental education.

The symposium kicks off with five Friday short course offerings including:

* A journey into Turtle Bayou to view Bald Eagles and get a glimpse of a Bald Eagle's nest on the "Eagle Expo Tour"
* The "Recycling, Landfills, and More! Tour", a three-stop adventure to the Recycling Foundation of Baton Rouge's Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), the North Baton Rouge Landfill and the LSU Hilltop Arboretum, each presenting state-of-the-art answers to metropolitan waste
* Wonders of the Wetlands
* Talk About Climate Change
* Project WET/Healthy Water, Healthy People

Educators will be treated to a festive Friday evening at the Marriott, enjoying the social mixer, meeting the exhibitors, and viewing the exhibits. State and Federal agencies, non-profit organizations, scientific research facilities, etc., will be represented. Biologists and researchers will be on hand to present information and answer questions. Exhibitors will also provide free educational materials including lesson plans and materials related to environmental topics.

Educators can select from 28 concurrent sessions that will be presented on Saturday. A variety of presenters with strong backgrounds in education, scientific research and government decision-making will attend. The event concludes with the Saturday luncheon and keynote address delivered by Jerome Zeringue, deputy executive director of the Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration.

The general registration cost is $50 and includes the Friday evening social, exhibit hall, Saturday continental breakfast, concurrent sessions, Saturday luncheon and the keynote address. Participants must pre-register for the Friday short course sessions, offered at an additional $10 cost. Lodging assistance is offered on a limited basis.
