Nominee for 2010 Samaritan of the Year Award
Jim Wyche is one of those special people who quietly goes about his life, not calling attention to himself, but always making a difference in the lives of other people. I personally know Jim from the many years he served on the Board of Samaritan Counseling Center. Jim took his role as board treasurer seriously, and was always willing to come to the office on a monthly basis and work with our bookkeeper, providing financial oversight. As a nonprofit agency, working on a slim budget, having the expertise of a committed board member makes a huge difference in our effectiveness as an agency.
Jim's community involvement extends far beyond his association with Samaritan. Jim is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Lake Charles, and has served in numerous capacities including chairman of the administrative board, chairman of the finance committee, usher, and member of the men's chorus. Jim also served for several years as the treasurer of the Lake Charles District of the United Methodist Church of Louisiana. He is also a member of the Carpenter's Helpers committee at First United Methodist Church, a group to help older members with household repairs.
Jim's faith experience does not stop at the door of his church, but has led him into working for the good of the community. Jim has been a participant for several years in Christmas in April projects to help repair homes in the Lake Charles area, including chairing one year's project. He has also participated in annual construction/ medical mission trips to Mexico for the past several year. Following a 38 year career with PPG Industries, Jim served as the vice-chairman of PPG retirees United Way Drive for two years. Jim has also been on the board of PPG friends, a volunteer organization of employees and retirees that help the community in various ways. Jim is a charter board member and officer of the Lamar Robertson Choral Foundation, whose purpose is to enhance the La. Choral Foundation's outreach to the community. Jim is a volunteer at Abraham's Tent, and currently volunteers on a weekly basis with the Calcasieu Community Clinic.
Whenever Jim pays us a visit at Samaritan, I am impressed with the joy he exudes. His love of family (married to Charlene, father of two daughters and grandfather of five), his love of God, and his love of life are evident. Jim offers his talents in ways that touch the mental, physical, and spiritual needs of our community. Jim Wyche is most deserving of the Samaritan of the Year award!
