La. Democratic Party chooses new chief

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Democratic Party has chosen Claude "Buddy" Leach as its new leader who will manage the party's 2010 election season fundraising and campaign efforts.

The Democratic State Central Committee, the party's governing body, agreed unanimously Saturday to make Leach the new chairman. He fills the job that was left vacant when Chris Whittington resigned last month.

Leach, a member of the Democratic National Committee, is a former congressman and former state lawmaker from southwest Louisiana.

Leach says his first priorities will be getting the party's finances in order and picking a new executive director to run the day-to-day operations of the party's headquarters. Then, he says the party will focus on organization efforts in each parish to help elect Democrats to Congress this year.
