Initial jobless claims rise in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Workforce Commission says initial claims for jobless benefits last week were 9 percent above those of a year ago.

The commission recorded 4,945 first-time unemployment claims for the week ending Jan. 16. For the comparable week ending Jan. 17, 2009, there were 4,527 initial claims.

The number of additional benefit weeks - an indicator of those still seeking work - fell to 66,735 from the previous week's total of 68,337. For the comparable week a year ago, there were 38,176 continued weeks claimed by the unemployed.
