LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - McNeese State head coach Dave Simmons told 7News sophomore Patrick Richard was stepping up to lead his team.

He did just that against Southeastern Louisiana.

Richard had 20 points as the Cowboys finally snapped their five-game losing streak with a win over the Lions, 71-67.

MSU also had a big contribution from guard Stephan Martin.  He had 19 points for McNeese.

This win is the Pokes' first since December 22nd.  That was when they defeated Southern-New Orleans at Burton Coliseum.  Since that point, MSU lost to Rice, Texas Tech, LSU, UT-San Antonio, and Lamar in that order.

Now Simmons' squad is back on track.  This was MSU's first Southland Conference victory of the season.

Next up for the Pokes is a road game on January 23rd.  They'll take on the Central Arkansas Bears in Conway.
