Mass. vote means more doubt for La. Medicaid money

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Republican's upset win in the Massachusetts Senate race means an even more uncertain future for as much as $300 million in Medicaid money for Louisiana.

Louisiana's Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu had won approval of the extra Medicaid money in Democrat-backed health care legislation that passed the Senate in December without a single GOP vote. Massachussetts state Sen. Scott Brown's victory in the race to succeed the late Edward M. Kennedy will give Republicans 41 senators, enough to maintain a filibuster against the health care bill.

Landrieu, who is taking political heat from conservatives for backing the health care bill, was not available for comment but was expected to issue a statement later Wednesday.
