Friend Ships prepares to depart for Haiti

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Friend Ships Unlimited is preparing for their first trip to Haiti since the nation was ravaged by an earthquake last week.

The outpour of donations, and people across Lake Charles wondering how they can do anything to help those in Haiti, has left quite an impression of those with Friend Ships.

Especially the outreach they have seen from local churches.

"There's ministries all over the city that are either gather funds, or sponsoring truckloads of rice or beans, or they're bringing in goods or they're sending people over to help," says Friends Ship President Sondra Tipton.

One ministry who is doing everything to help is Greater Saint Mary's, who is located across the street from Friend Ships.

"We are located closer than any church in the world to Friendship missions, and that's a wonderful organization that's doing help all over the world, and we just want to be a part of it," says GSM Pastor Samuel C. Tolbert.

While very thankful for all of the donations they have received, there is one thing that the people of Friend Ships Unlimited can never have enough of, and that's manpower.

"That's a tremendous need that we have right now, there's so much going on right now with stuff coming in and getting ready to ship. We could really use some local volunteers that could just come in for the day and do whatever needs to be done," said Tipton.
