W.M.A. lottery hunt application deadline is February 3

The following is a news release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is reminding turkey hunters that the deadline for applications for the turkey lottery hunts on several Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) is Feb. 3.

Lottery hunt applications are available from department field offices and may also be downloaded from the department's Web site at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/regulations/wma/lotteryhunts. Hunters who would like to participate in one of the lottery hunts must fill out a lottery hunt application and return it with the $5 application fee to the Baton Rouge office by Feb. 3.

LDWF offers turkey hunting opportunities on 28 WMAs, with many opportunities coming in the form of lottery hunts, which require hunters to plan in advance if they wish to participate.

The Clear Creek, Sherburne and Tunica Hills WMAs have portions of the season open to lottery hunters only and another portion open to all hunters.  The Bayou Macon, Dewey Wills, Loggy Bayou, Sabine, Sicily Island Hills, Union and West Bay WMAs only offer lottery turkey hunts.

In addition to the general lottery hunts, youth lottery hunts are held on 14 WMAs, which are usually held the weekend prior to the general turkey season opening.  All youth turkey hunts are lottery hunts and guides are provided for the youth participants.

The 2010 turkey season on most WMAs opens on March 20 and most youth lottery hunts occur on March 13.  Hunters should consult the 2010 Turkey Hunting Regulations for specific WMA dates and rules.  The regulations pamphlet is available on the department's Web site at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/seasons/turkey.
