NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The chief justice of Louisiana Supreme Court is recovering from a stroke and has been released from a hospital's intensive care unit.
A statement released Wednesday by the court says Chief Justice Catherine "Kitty" Kimball's condition is improving rapidly. She suffered the ischemic stroke Sunday and was expected to be moved to a private hospital room later Wednesday.
The court said Kimball has been talking "extensively" with relatives and her doctors following a successful surgery to remove a blockage that caused her stroke.
Kimball became the court's first female chief justice in January 2009. The 64-year-old served as an associate justice from 1992 to 2008.
