LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A local mother accused of cruelty to a juvenile, who decided to plead no contest to two charges rather than go to trial, was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Friday.

After a hearing lasting three hours, Judge David Ritchie sentenced Stanley to 30 years in prison. She will only serve 12 years unless she violates her probation which lasts 10 years. While on probation, she is to have no contact with minor children.

Last February,  Jasmine Stanley was indicted in connection with injuries to two of her four small children. The charges to which she pleaded involve her daughter who was 18 months old at the time. Stanley's attorney says the child fell off a piece of playground equipment and that the young mother never intentionally hurt her child.

At last word, Stanley's children were in the custody of the state and their future was to be decided by a family court judge.
