LAKE CHARLES, LA.(KPLC) - As the first order of business Kevin Guidry was nominated and voted in as the police jury's president for 2010 with Les Farnum chosen as vice president. Outgoing president Hal McMillin offered his perspective on the accomplishments of the past year listing projects including, "Burton Coliseum complex, outdoor arena; Courthouse Complex, replacement of the seam copper beam roof up there, restored; We also made a lot of progress on the Seed Center which will consolidate economic development efforts and the Business Incubator; a drainage basin study."

While the new president, Guidry, hopes they'll make strides on the sewage problem in the new year. "We have so many opportunities here in Calcasieu Parish to better the quality of life for the people here and there's a number of projects that we have as a governing body that we will go forth on this year and I'm just excited to sit as president. One of the things we definitely want to concentrate on this year is sewer. That's a main priority for all the fifteen districts that we represent."

In other action,  jurors agreed to go out for bids for new construction to extend the frontage road south of I-10 near Sulphur to the SRA Canal. Administrator Mark McMurry says it will have far reaching benefits.  "This is an item that ten years, fifteen years, twenty years from now will be so grand in terms of the impact on the overall parish, the community particularly around the sulphur area, but I think parishwide. When you start putting a frontage road on the interstate you can look around the country and see what happens with that and the impact that has on the communities around that."  The project is expected to begin in the spring and be complete by the end of the year.
