The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) with Chef Philippe Parola will hold a presentation on the potential commercial and recreational market for Asian carp. In an effort to produce a demand for two species of Asian carp, the silver and bighead carp, LDWF and Chef Parola are launching the "Silverfin Promotion," which includes rebranding Asian carp as "Silverfin."
Chef Cullen Lord of Flemmings Restaurant, Darryl Rivere of A la Carte Food and Chef Parola will be preparing Silverfin recipes for everyone attending.
WHEN: Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 at 11 a.m.
WHERE: Louisiana Room of the LDWF headquarters building located at 2000 Quail Dr. in Baton Rouge.
Included in LDWF's management plan for Asian carp is creating a demand for the white, delicious meat they possess and relaxing the regulations on fishing for these nuisance fish.
Both species of carp are exotic to U.S. waters and causing major problems in the areas where they live. LDWF has confirmed that Asian carp are established throughout the Mississippi River Basin and in the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers. Eradication is not possible, but it is possible to create a sufficient demand for the fish, both recreationally and commercially, to control their numbers.
