Keeping the new year safe

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - It is  almost a new year, and you can bet there will be alcohol on the menu. Sadly, that means drunk drivers on the road.

"To combat that, the Sheriff has activated a DWI enforcement detail," said Commander James McGee with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

Officers will be out in full force, actively looking for people who are intoxicated and driving. This program has been in operation since before Christmas. So far the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office has arrested nearly twenty people for driving drunk. But, on top of the roving detail, the Sheriff's office is taking it a step further.

"We are going to be out tonight, very strong, stronger than we ever have been. We are also going to have a DWI check point tonight. It will be tonight, at an undisclosed area," said Commander James McGee.

During the holidays law enforcement has made sure to educate people about the dangers of drunk driving, but sadly, Commander McGee said there will still be some who decide to break the law.

"There will be people drinking and driving tonight. The message I have for them is that we are going to catch you eventually. If you continue to drink and drive we are going to catch you," said Commander McGee.

If you plan on having fun with family and friends this year, plan on being safe. Have a cab service on speed dial, reserve a designated driver, or call a wrecker to bring you and your car home, free of charge.
