CPSO roving DWI detail

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Drunk drivers can cause a big problem, especially during the holidays. Last year, a day after Christmas 5 year old Garrett Vice lost his life, all  because of an alleged drunk driver.

To keep the roads safe during the holidays, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office is out actively looking for drunk drivers, as part of their DWI roving detail.

"I am looking for a vehicle swerving, crossing the center line, veering off to the right onto the shoulder. Sometimes people will not turn their headlights on. When they are driving, they will speed up and then drive real slow. They will  make wide turns," said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Deputy, Cody Soil eau.

On our ride along, it was not long before a driver was pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving.

"As I approached the vehicle I could immediately smell an alcoholic beverage on his breath," said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Deputy, Trey Thomas.

After several tests were performed on the driver, deputies determined that he was, in fact, intoxicated. His next stop was a jail cell .

A couple of hours later another driver is spotted crossing the center line with his vehicle. Deputy Soil eau pulled him over and began performing a filed sobriety test.

"It showed that he was intoxicated. He did lose his balance, and he could not perform the tests proficiently," said Deputy Soil eau.

Another drunk driver is pulled from the road, making it safer for the rest of us.

Section 8 applicants will still face difficulties finding low rent housing

    Monday, July 24 2017 8:16 PM EDT2017-07-25 00:16:54 GMT

Part of the reason the waiting list takes for Section 8 Housing takes so long to pare down is because there's a shortage of Section 8 housing, at least in the Lake Charles area. It's because of the economy...and high rents.  Local officials are working to increase the dollars available, but it's still hard for residents to find the housing. "It's harder than Houston and Houston is bigger," said Kristina Broussard,  who lives in public hou...
