NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana's population grew between July 2008 and July 2009, but growth over the decade was marginal.
That's according to newly released estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Those figures put the state's population at 4.49 million in July 2009. That compares to 4.45 million a year earlier and roughly 4.47 million during the last decennial census in 2000.
South Louisiana was ravaged by several hurricanes during the decade, most notably, Katrina and Rita in 2005. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced as a result. Rebuilding and recovery of population continues in New Orleans and other affected communities.
These are the last state-level estimates the agency plans to release before the 2010 Census.
