LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Senate Democrats overnight have won a crucial test vote on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.
All 58 Democrats and the Senate's two Independents held together early Monday morning against unanimous Republican opposition, providing the 60-40 margin needed to shut down a threatened filibuster. That puts them on track for passage before Christmas.
The bill would extend coverage to more than 30 million Americans who now lack it, while banning insurance company practices such as denial of benefits on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions.
