Family of Divonte LeDay speaks out

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - We brought you new details last night on the death of 18-year old Divonte LeDay.

Police say he was shot by a homeowner during an apparent burglary early Saturday morning.

He was found dead a block away that afternoon.

While authorities continue the investigation, LeDay's family also hurts for answers.

"He had dreams and ambitions, just like any young person," says Rev. Michael Cuba Jr.

Michael Cuba Jr. says his cousin, Divonte LeDay, was your typical 18-year old kid.

"He was a good young man who had wonderful sense of humor," says Cuba. "He loved his family and he loved friends."

When Cuba heard the news on Saturday afternoon, it was a tragedy he says he will never forget.

"I just believe there were more plans for his life," says Cuba. "But God knows best."

Meanwhile authorities continue to investigate the case and say that LeDay had a past criminal history.

"We know that we've had some dealings with him in burglaries," says Sgt. Mark Kraus of the Lake Charles Police Department.

The family fears LeDay's past will taint the present investigation.

"It is a hurtful thing to have false, incomplete, or irrelevant information distorting the character of Mr. LeDay," says Cuba.

That is why the family is coming forward on behalf of their lost family member.

"He is a human being and it's covered under our rights, that justice is served on his behalf," says Cuba. "Things that are in the past are of the past. That's basically what I'm going to say at this time."

Funeral arrangements for Divonte LeDay are still pending.

If you have any information in the case, contact the Lake Charles Police Department at (337) 491-1311.
