BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - First-time claims for unemployment payments jumped 10.5 percent last week in Louisiana.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission said Friday that there were 4,880 initial claims for the week ending Dec. 5. That's up from 4,415 the previous week, which was shortened by the Thanksgiving holiday.
For the comparable week ending Dec. 6, 2008, there were 4,115 initial claims.
Last week, there were 65,092 continued weeks of jobless benefits claimed by those still without work. That's a 7.4 percent increase from the previous week's total of 60,632. For the comparable week a year ago, there were 32,564 additional weeks of benefits claimed.
