Safety tips in decking the halls

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - For the Hosie family, it is an annual Christmas tradition.

"We went Christmas tree shopping today," says Paula Hosie. "We checked out a few different places."

Paula Hosie says nothing can fill your house with more joy than a real tree.

"I love the smell and it is always fun to pick it out," says Hosie.

But having a real tree could result in serious consequences if you are not careful.

"There's a lot of fire hazard to some trees," says Kenneth Pate, a Christmas tree salesman in Westlake.

Pate has a few words of advice when picking out the perfect tree.

"Always remember to look for fresh trees that don't have a lot of needles falling off of them, check for nests, and any kind of debris that would start a fire," says Pate.

After you've picked out the tree, taking care of it is the next safety step.

"Take a little bit of water and a little bit of Seven up and water it every fourth day," says Pate.  "This will make sure the tree stays good and green."

Not only is it important to remember safety when picking out a holiday tree, but it is also important to be safe when putting up holiday lights this season.

"I tend to overload which I know is against precautions but it is so tempting," says Jonathan Fontenot.

Fontenot is a big of fan of heavy lighting on his Christmas tree.

If you are also a big fan of holiday lights, make sure your home is free of electrical problems.

"Make sure that the cords are adequate with grounds on them and make sure that they are plugged in right," says Pate.

It is also important to make sure you turn the lights off before you go to bed and it doesn't hurt to buy new lights.

"Don't use lights some lights that you've had for years packed away in the attic," says Pate. "Get new lights."

Other safety tips on decorating your home include keeping your tree away from an open vent, moving the tree away from the walls so it has room to breathe, and checking your smoke alarm batteries just in case if an accident were to happen.
