LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A rollover accident on I-10 kills 5 people and leaves 10 others injured.

The accident happened just after 12 p.m. Saturday, November 28 east of LA 928 in Ascension Parish.

A mini van and a refrigerator box truck were traveling side by side in the west bound lane of I-10 when a tire blew out on the mini van, according to Louisiana State Police Troop A.

That's when the van and the truck collided and crashed into the east bound lanes, causing the mini van to roll over several times.

It is a sight Tammy Hall will never forget.

"I just saw the vehicle flip about three or four times and kids flying everywhere," says Tammy Hall, a witness of the accident. "It looked to be about 10 or 11 kids out of the cars and everyone started stopping."

While the two adults were wearing seat belts, all 13 of the children in the back seats were not restrained and were all fully ejected from the vehicle.

"At this time we have 5 that are confirmed deceased," says Trooper Russell Graham of the Louisiana State Police.

The 5 deceased include the driver and 4 of the 13 children in the back seats.

Officers say the result could have been different the children had worn their seat belts.

"Mistakes happen on the highway, people are human, that's why you have to be attentive," says Jeff Wiley of Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office. "That is why you need to wear your seat belt and always have two hands on the wheel and stay alert. One minor can end up in a tragic result as this one did today."

The driver of the refrigerated box truck was not injured in the crash.

The ten other passengers are being treated at a local hospital.

The names of the deceased are being held pending notification of the next of kin.

State officers say the crash remains under investigation.
