LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for the State of Louisiana is 7.4%.

But as the holiday season draws near, it could bring cheer to those looking for jobs.

Local businesses have already begun hiring additional help for the holiday season.

"For this store, the holiday shopping season actually started about a month ago," says Ellie Yglesias, store manager for the Buckle. "I need more employees just to handle the traffic."

Yglesias says she's received quite a few responses to her help wanted sign.

Charles Sullivan, a student at McNeese has his fingers crossed for the position.

"I like working with people and I like the Christmas rush and all that," says Sullivan.

Although Sullivan already has a job, this Christmas he plans to take on two at a time.

"If I get another job throughout Christmas I'll make enough money to buy all my gifts and everything," says Sullivan.

While the Buckle is hiring 20 new employees for the holiday season, JCPenney is looking to fill 60 to 80 additional positions.

"The stores are all open extended hours so we're open longer during the day," says David Stanley, store manager of JCPenney. "We need additional help to take care of all the hours that the store is open."

Stanley says pay is based on experience and the positions are all part-time.

"Part-time could be anywhere from 20 hours a week to 35 hours a week," says Stanley.

Store managers say potential employees should take advantage of holiday jobs, as a job in retail could turn into a full time career in the future.

Yglesias says she plans to keep her best sales people this holiday season.

"I just paid a part-timer 12 bucks an hour because they got on the floor and sold so much," says Iglesias. "If you get in here and you make the sales, then I'm definitely going to want you on for longer."

Stores in Prien Lake Mall say that you need to get holiday job applications in by December 1st at the latest.
