Beauregard Parish manager suspended

DERIDDER, LA  (AP) - The Beauregard Parish Police Jury has voted to suspend parish manager Elton Pickering Sr. for three days without pay for an outburst that occurred in a committee meeting.

Last week, the panel discussed approval of a 5 percent raise for employee Tayra DeHoven -- which police jurors said was the agreement when she was hired as an accountant. Pickering asked to speak about the matter in the committee meeting. He said it was unfair that DeHoven should get a 5 percent raise when many of his employees had worked for years without a raise. Pickering became upset with the panel.

The American Press reports that Vice President Jerry Shirley presented the personnel committee on Tuesday with a letter concerning Pickering's behavior.
