Community voices concern over registered sex offenders

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The topic of discussion was sex offenders, something the people living in the town of Hayes said is a growing problem. To ensure the safety of the community, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's office hosted a meeting letting citizens know what they are doing to keep an eye on the men.

Currently, the town of Hayes has five registered sex offenders living in the area This is causing quite a stir amongst residents.

To see if a sex offender is living in your area you can log on to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office website and do a search. You can also register for email alerts so that if an offender moves in your neighborhood you will be notified.

"I do believe the community understands that what we are doing is abiding by the color of the law. Whatever the law says, that is what we are going to enforce. I think the community responded to that. I think they understood that what we are doing is keeping track of these sex offenders so that we know where they are at all times," said JoAnn Pape with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

"We have an individual that is willing to rent and allow these sex offenders to form a community inside of our community. It is a great fear to us all," said Milton Estabrooks.

The man accused of renting to sex offenders was at the meeting. Arnold Harrell said he will not discriminate against anyone.

"They are some of the finest people, as far as no trouble. They feel they cannot afford to move because it cost them so much to move. I treat them like human beings," said Arnold Harrell.

But, many from within the community want the registered sex offenders to leave.

"None of us are really aware of what we can do, so what we are going to do is go to our legislators. We want them to provide us with the information and give us the tools to combat it," said Estabrooks.

The city of Westlake is close to hitting the jackpot when it comes to casino revenue. Last year, 23-million dollars from the three local casinos and Delta Downs slots was pooled and then distributed by the Calcasieu Parish Gaming Revenue District. The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and City of Lake Charles get the most, about 10-million dollars apiece. Sulphur, DeQuincy, Vinton and Iowa take a smaller cut based on population.
