COPY-New Highway laws in Louisiana

By Adam Hooper - bio | email LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - I did not know is no longer and excuse. The month long grace period has ended and the new driving laws in Louisiana are now being enforced. "The new changes are the laws that went into effect today, as far as enforcement. Officers will be going out and writing you a citation for that violation," said Stephen LaFrgue with Louisiana State Police. The first change involves seat belts. Back seat passengers will now be buckling up. "Of the three that came out, one of the most important is the seat belt law. All passengers in the vehicle are now required to wear that safety belt,"said LaFargue. The next change will require all drivers to stay in the right lane while driving down the highway, and only under certain conditions will you be allowed to cross into the left lane. "You have to fit in that certain criteria in order to drive in that left lane. This is for safety reasons also. We don't want congestion, backing up traffic on that roadway," said LaFargue. The last changes makes it safer for people riding a bicycle. "If you come up on a cyclist, he is in front of you, give him the three foot room when you go around him," said LaFargue. Below, is a full detailed list of the new driving laws. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Louisiana State Police will be stopping and issuing citations to motorists who are in violation of the new changes recently made to Louisiana highway safety laws. ACT 166   revises the current Seat Belt Law by requiring the driver and passengers seated in both the front and rear seats of vehicles to buckle-up. ACT 190 requires that any person operating a motor vehicle on a multi lane roadway (including interstates) must travel in the right lane and shall not drive in the left lane except under the following conditions: If the motorist must travel in the left lane, it shall not be at a speed less than that of a vehicle traveling in the right lane. Vehicles preparing for a left turn at an intersection, private road or driveway, When passing another vehicle that is traveling in the same direction below the posted speed limit When the right lanes are congested When emergency vehicles are parked on or near the right shoulder and have their emergency lights activated. When directed otherwise by law enforcement. If the motorist must travel in the left lane, it shall not be at a speed less than that of a vehicle traveling in the right lane. ACT 147 requires operators of a motor vehicle, when overtaking and passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction on the roadway, shall leave a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet and maintain that clearance until they safely past the bicycle.
