LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Some Cowboy fans thought this day would never come.
But now it's here.
McNeese State football will travel to Tiger Stadium on October 16th, 2010 to play the LSU Tigers.
This is the first ever meeting between the two schools in football. This also makes McNeese the first ever in-state FCS team to play the Tigers.
MSU athletic director Tommy McClelland says this is a huge boost for the Cowboy football program.
"We're honored there are other schools in the state but they considered us and we're going to go first," McClelland said. "We're first in line, first on the runway. We'll see what happens. Just for our fans and our community to say we're going to go against LSU, it means a lot to the people in this state and this community. "
Head coach Matt Viator is completely focused on MSU's next game against Savannah State. But he said this certainly helps his program.
"We're looking forward to it," Viator said. "I think it's something that will help our program in the long run. It will be a good opportunity next year for us."
"If you're in Texas, people want to play UT. They want to play Texas," McClelland said. "If you're in Alabama, people want to play Alabama. We're in Louisiana and we want to play LSU."
