October 8, 9, 10, 2009

What is Camp Bluebird?

A unique experience for adult cancer patients, Camp Bluebird is a 3-day, 2-night camp held at the Emory Wallace Retreat Center on Bundick Lake, located approximately 50 miles north of Lake Charles. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, campers receive support in a creative, educational atmosphere.  Camp Bluebird is sponsored by Lake Charles Memorial Hospital and BellSouth Volunteers and held once each year.

What is the purpose of Camp Bluebird?

Camp Bluebird provides adult cancer patients:

  • A time for listening and learning
  • A time for sharing
  • Suggestions for adjusting to life with cancer
  • Tips for giving-and receiving-family support
  • An overview of non-medical needs and how to meet them
  • Answers to medical concerns
  • Information on treatments and side effects
  • Nutritional information
  • Creative outlets through arts and crafts

Who can attend?

Any adult, age 18 or older, who has been diagnosed with cancer, is invited to attend.

What are the accommodations like?

Campers sleep on bunk beds in air-conditioned, dormitory-type facilities. They will be able to enjoy more than 20 acres of natural beauty, including a nature trail, over-water crosswalk, sport court with basketball and tennis, and a large dining hall. Private rooms are available, but space is limited.

What should I bring?

Campers should bring toiletry items, linens, comfortable clothing, and walking shoes.  Meals and snacks will be provided.

Is transportation provided?

Campers will meet volunteers at Memorial Hospital and ride to the camp in a van; however, a map is included for those wishing to provide their own trasportation.

Who sponsors Camp Bluebird?

Camp Bluebird is a special project of the Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital, Memorial volunteers, and the local chapter of BellSouth Volunteers.

The name Camp Bluebird originated from the Telephone Pioneers of America project preserving bluebirds in the Southeast.  Each camper will have the opportunity to build a bluebird house to assist the pioneers with this project.

Who are the counselors?

Camp Bluebird counselors are members of Memorial's Cancer Center team, and include physicians, nurses, a social worker, a dietician, pastoral care associates and volunteers.
