UPDATE: Media will appeal decision to keep Denby pre-trial hearings closed

By Michael Addison -  email

UPDATE: Media will not be allowed inside the courtroom for the pre-trial hearings in the Jeffery Denby murder case. This order will be taken to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals.

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The issue of whether a Beauregard Parish judge had the right to keep the public and media out of her courtroom was decided today in DeRidder.

On July 16, Judge Martha O'Neal ordered a hearing for accused child killer Jeffery Denby to be held behind closed doors.

Judge O'Neal says she closed the proceedings to prevent a biased jury.

A marsh fire near Grand Chenier in Cameron Parish is believed to be the cause of smoke in the area. Several viewers have reported the smell of smoke and a haze. The same conditions are present near KPLC's office downtown. Dick Gremillion, head of Calcasieu OEP, said that radar is showing what appears to be a marsh fire in Grand Chenier and that wind conditions are favorable to push the smoke into Calcasieu.
