Summary:

The BASIC CORE curriculum is the current minimum graduation requirement.  It does meet entrance requirements for community colleges and technical colleges.  It DOES fulfill the course requirement to receive TOPS/TECH scholarships to technical colleges. Students may choose to ENTER the BASIC core at the end of the 2nd year in high school.

The CAREER DIPOMA curriculum does meet entrance requirements for community colleges and technical colleges.  It DOES NOT fulfill the curriculum requirements for TOPS/TECH scholarships.  Students may choose to ENTER the CAREER DIPLOMA curriculum at the beginning of the 1st year in high school.

The significant difference between the Basic Core curriculum (minimum graduation requirements) and the new Career Diploma curriculum are:

  • Geometry (or Applied Geometry) is required in the Basic Core while Geometry (or Applied Geometry) is allowed but not required in the Career Diploma.
  • English III is required in the Basic Core while English III is allowed but not required in the Career Diploma.
  • Remedial courses in Math or English are required in the Career Diploma track if the student entered 9th grade with an unsatisfactory on the 8th grade LEAP in Math or English.  (The remedial course will count as a course in Math or English for graduation.)
  • Basic Core requires 24 credits plus a career major for graduation while Career Diploma requires 23 credits plus a career major for graduation.

Similarities are abundant:

  • The two curriculums mirror each other for the most part with four math credits, four English credits, three science credits, three social studies and 2 HPE credits, with the remaining credits coming from electives aimed at a career major.
  • All exit exams must be passed regardless of the pathway to graduation.
