L'Auberge du Lac Casino Resort awarded fit friendly designation by American Heart Association

Recognized in Forbes Magazine for workplace wellness programs and focus on employee health.

LAKE CHARLES, La. - L'Auberge du Lac Casino Resort, a luxury Texas Hill Country-themed resort in Lake Charles, La., has been recognized by the American Heart Association's Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace. L'Auberge received Gold recognition for its workplace wellness programs, only the second Southwest Louisiana business to earn the honor.

"We commend L'Auberge for placing a priority on health and wellness," said Cassondra Guilbeau, senior regional director for the American Heart Association. "Studies suggest that implementing a worksite physical activity program and promoting a culture of physical activity will help companies increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, lower turnover and reduce healthcare costs."

Among the health initiatives cited, L'Auberge has a full-time health educator on staff. Kristie Evans, LDN, RD conducts health seminars for employees, offers complimentary dietary counseling and oversees property wellness efforts. Evans also works with property chefs to offer healthy choices in the employee dining room; recently adding items such as frozen yogurt, skim milk, wheat bread, chicken wraps and turkey burgers.

L'Auberge held its own version of The Biggest Loser called L'Auberge Loses Pounds. Participants in the sixteen week program lost a stunning 2,044 pounds collectively. The top female, top male and top team each won $2,000 in May. All participants took part in Boot Camp, a weekly weigh-in and healthy living seminars. 180 employees participated; those who met contest requirements will be eligible for additional prizes if they keep the weight off for six months.

L'Auberge holds an annual health fair for employees offering complimentary screenings and flu shots. The company also encourages physical activity through an established walking program. Employees receive complimentary pedometers and maps for on-site walking routes including contests for prizes such as 100 Miles in 40 Days.

"We are honored to receive national recognition for our wellness programs," said L'Auberge vice president and general manager Larry Lepinski. "Providing convenient programs to our employees allows them to more easily take control of their health and reduces medical expenses, so everyone wins. We are so pleased that our employees have enthusiastically embraced our new focus on health and fitness."

L'Auberge routinely provides incentives to employees to encourage healthy choices such as raffles for fitness equipment and contests. In October, the first 25 employees to sign up for a new walking program were rewarded with a meet-and-greet with Subway Restaurant spokesman Jared Fogle. The property also offers weight management classes, stress relief and heart healthy seminars and grocery store shopping tours as part of its efforts.

A special advertising section in Forbes magazine recently included a list of the 316 companies across the nation that received this special recognition, including L'Auberge.
