Early Morning Fire Damages Children's Museum

Reported by: KPLC Staff

An early morning fire heavily damages The Children's Museum in downtown Lake Charles.

At 2 a.m., a Lake Charles police patrol unit passed by The Children's Museum on Broad St. to see smoke and flames coming out of one of the windows.

Officials say within 12 minutes, more than 20 firefighters had entered the scene of the fire, and contained it to the first floor.

Firefighters tell 7 News that because of the structure of this 3-story historic building, they had to act quickly to ensure that it did not spread to the other two floors.

At this point, the fire remains under investigation, and when we talked to The Children's Museum director, Dan Ellender, he told us that they lost several animals in their exhibit, but they were able to save an iguana.

Ellender says the board of directors will be meeting today at noon to decide where to go from here.
