State officials say a program to help senior citizens access the medication discounts offered by individual drug companies has helped more than 11,600 people get $16.4 million in free or reduced prescription drugs.
The Louisiana SenioRx program was approved by lawmakers in 2003 as a pilot program in four regional offices to make seniors more aware of the drug discounts they qualified for. It was expanded statewide in the current fiscal year that began July first.
Senior citizens are eligible to participate if they are age 60 or older, don't have insurance that helps pay for medications and are below certain income levels.
