Street renamed to honor legacy of Pryce's Pharmacy

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Pryce's Pharmacy has been serving up health care on the corner of Lawrence Street and Enterprise Boulevard for more than 100 years.

"The Pryce family started the pharmacy back in 1908 and Dr. Pryce was not only a pharmacist but also a medical doctor. So he provided a lot of services in the community," said Councilman Marshall Simien, Jr.

Shortly after the Pharmacy's centennial celebration, community leaders in North Lake Charles started working to meet the requirements to change the name of the Lawrence Street to Pryce Street in honor of the late Dr. George Pryce and his son Dr. Ulric Pryce.

"Both of these men, were health professionals and served the community whether people could pay for their services or not."

Third generation pharmacist Frank Pryce continues to run the family business today and is overwhelmed by the gesture from the community.

"I was one of those young boys years ago... Many... Many years ago. Laughs," Councilman Rodney Geyen.

Geyen fondly remembers the pharmacy as the first minority-owned business in Lake Charles.

"I am in full support of this name change because it goes way back. That was one of the only places we could go get a double dip of ice cream at one time... It goes way back. So I am in full agreement with the name change," said Geyen.

And so does the rest of the council, unanimously voting to change Lawrence Street to Pryce Street.

"We've always had the motto for the store - a community service - and we've done that and it shows with the turnout we've had tonight. We were appreciated by the people of the community," said Frank Pryce.

Pryce says he'll continue to work and serve and dreams of economic development returning to North Lake Charles. "It's going to be back again... Pretty soon," said Pryce.

And when it does, the Pryce family name will forever remain a beacon in the community. The City of Lake Charles says they plan to have an official unveiling ceremony once the street signs are complete.

New details emerge about two Vinton high school trailers stolen in broad daylight, Sunday.  Vinton Police Chief Ricky Fox says they have narrowed down the search to a suspect with a long criminal history out of Port Arthur last seen by law enforcement driving the same car as seen in the video. The Vinton band trailer was parked behind the school and the football trailer was parked nearby inside a locked, gated area. Common deterrence methods seem to be falling short as thieves...
